Been in a car accident?
Here's what to do at the scene.
1 - Make safety your first priority
Check that everyone involved is okay. If anyone is injured, or if there's significant vehicle damage or the road is blocked, call emergency services on triple zero (000) immediately. Don't assume someone else has already called.
2 - DO NOT ADMIT LIABILITY
3 - Move your vehicle if it's safe to do so
If your car is blocking traffic and you're able to move it, pull it to a safe spot off the road. Switch off the engine to reduce fire risk and put your hazard lights on. Clear any road debris only if you can do so safely.
4 - Exchange and record details
You'll need the following information for your insurance claim:
Date, time and location of the accident
The other driver's full name, licence number, address and phone number
The other vehicle's registration number and make/type of vehicle
The other vehicle’s insurance details
5 - Talk to any witnesses
If bystanders saw what happened, ask for their contact details. Witness accounts can be invaluable if there's a dispute over how the accident occurred or who was at fault.
6 - Take photos
Document everything while you're still at the scene. Photograph the damage to all vehicles from multiple angles, any property damage, and the surrounding environment — including the intersection, traffic signals and road signs. More is more here.
7 - Contact your broker
Get in touch with us as soon as you can, while the details are still fresh. We'll guide you through the claims process, liaise with your insurer on your behalf, and help you understand what you're entitled to based on your cover, whether the other driver is insured, and how fault is determined.
